While Ensoniq’s approach generally worked with most games, some older games had problems detecting the virtualized hardware on some systems. The chip was capable of spatializing all audio automatically, but still required DirectSound3D usage for specific localization of sounds. The jack switches modes if 4-speaker output became active. AudioPCI, while designed to be cheap, is still quite functional. As you can see on the image, there aren’t many components on this card at all Thanks for marking this as the answer.

It was particularly unfortunate because the AudioPCI used system RAM ensonia patch set storage which in itself offers tremendous potential for new patch sets over the traditional ROM storage previously used. These drivers are provided simply because these were quite good cards, and the drivers are almost completely extinct in terms of availability on the Internet, since Ensoniq was unfortunately bought out by Creative Labs, and it seems there are few or no ensonjq elsewhere.

It was Ensoniq’s last sound card product before they were acquired by Creative Technology. Elite has some reverb and chorus enabled by default and you can tweak it with sysex commands. It is SBPro-capable for digital sound but has no bit choice.
Listening to the Doom recordings from the first post, I can hear the loss in quality compared to what I remember. A good resource for legacy drivers in general, in Finland – a good place to start.

This especially applies to soundcards which require bootup initialization in order to provide SoundBlaster Pro doe SoundBlaster 16 compatibility modes. Most of the various SoundBlaster cards of a particular family SB, AWE, etc share similar jumper configurations especially for base address, MPU base address, etc so one of the following references should suit your card even if your particular SoundBlaster model number ct-xxxx doesn’t match exactly.

Several patch set choices are available, varying in size and instrument quality 2, 4, or 8 MB. When Creative got involved, they upgraded the chip a couple of times, and renamed the chip to ES and then ES So you are guaranteed that these drivers will work if you have a card that looks like the one in the picture above.
